merit scholarships for international students
With its merit scholarship program, University of Hamburg supports outstanding international students and doctoral researchers of all subjects and degree levels who are actively involved in a social or intercultural context. The awarding of a merit scholarship allows recipients to concentrate fully on their studies and gives them the opportunity to develop their skills.
students entitled to funding if they:
- are pursuing an academic degree at Universität Hamburg and have been enrolled in your degree program for at least 2 semesters (master’s and doctoral students can apply after 1 completed semester);
- do not hold German citizenship;
- are not eligible for the federal student loan scheme (BAföG)
Doctoral Scholarships
University of Hamburg awards two annual scholarships of €1,200 per month exclusively for (prospective) doctoral students with supervision at Universität Hamburg.
Fast-track program
University of Hamburg was awarded funding for 4 clusters of excellence in the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments. It was also declared a University of Excellence. As part of its Excellence Strategy, the University awards various funding and support options such as the fast-track program.
Universität Hamburg thus enables early career researchers to skip obtaining the usual individual master’s degree and go from a bachelor’s degree to a four-year doctoral degree program directly. Our goal is to attract young talents to science at an early stage.
International research exchanges
Within the scope of University of Hamburg ’s international partnerships, researchers have the opportunity to take part in a research or teaching assignment at one of our partner universities abroad.

Universität Hamburg awards postdoctoral fellowships to especially qualified early career researchers from Germany and abroad. By assuming sole responsibility for a research project, fellows prepare the next stage of their career—for example, an appointment to a junior or W2 (tenured) professorship or the leadership of an early career research group.
Travel expense subsidies
(Young) researchers and students can apply for travel expense subsidies for trips related to research and conferences.
Erasmus Staff Mobility
The Staff Mobility—Staff Training (STT) programs offer administrative personnel at the University of Hamburg the chance for professional development at a European university.
