Kyoto University

Kyoto University (KU) is a public comprehensive university with around 23,000 students and 2,700 academic staff. The university was founded in 1897. This makes it Japan’s second-oldest public university. Alongside the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University is one of the country’s foremost universities and, with 11 Nobel laureates to date, also one of the most respected worldwide. There has been a cooperation agreement between Universität Hamburg and Kyoto University since 2017, with university wide joint symposia in 2017 (Hamburg) and 2018 (Kyoto). In July 2020, Kyoto University (KU) and Universität Hamburg (UHH) concluded a Memorandum of Understanding to form a joint strategic partnership. With the goal of initiating and strengthening their cooperation in research and education, KU and UHH have launched a funding program to support joint projects in 2021. The funding shall enable KU and UHH faculty and researchers to identify complementary strengths, facilitate the use of synergies, and promote the future development of outstanding projects.
