Workshops in German
Lernziele:
- Deutsche Universitätslandschaft: Traditionen, Regeln, Strukturen
- Deutsche Lehr– und Lernkultur: typische Veranstaltungsformen an deutschen Hochschulen (Vorlesungen und Seminare), Diskussion, Gruppenarbeit, studentische Referate, Klausuren und Hausarbeiten
When: Friday, May 16, 2025, 2 pm - 6 pm
Who: Franziska Werner-Saidi

Was Dich erwartet:

Workshops in English
Workshop: Academic Cultures (in English)
How do I approach professors at German universities? How do I prepare for a meeting with a lecturer to discuss the topic of my term paper? What exactly is a term paper and what is actually expected of me?
Arriving at a German university can be a challenge. University communication, teaching methods and academic practice differ slightly from country to country. They are based on unspoken values, norms and roles and the resulting expectations.
The aim of the workshop is to shed light on these unspoken rules. A reflective look at communication, relationships and expectations with lecturers, fellow students and other members of the university helps to better understand how to navigate the German higher education system safely and successfully, and how to get the support you need.
Learning objectives:
- German higher education landscape: traditions, rules, structures
- German teaching and learning culture: typical forms of teaching at German universities (lectures and seminars), discussions, group work, student presentations, exams and assignments
When: Friday, May 9, 2025, 2 pm - 6 pm
Who: Franziska Werner-Saidi
Where: Campus Center, Alsterterrasse 1, Room (415 or 416)

Workshop: Emotional Awareness and Resilience (in English)
The term resilience describes the ability to adapt to new situations, even when things get difficult. People with a high level of resilience can deal well with such situations and emerge stronger. They can control their emotions, adapt to setbacks and maintain a positive attitude even under pressure. In resilience training, you will learn various methods and techniques to strengthen your resilience.
Learning objectives:
- We clarify what resilience is and which factors and skills can help you to overcome challenging situations.
- We identify typical and personal stress factors, learn and reflect on methods to reduce stress and promote calmness.
When: Saturday, May 31, 2025, 9 am — 3 pm

Workshop: Intercultural Training for International Students - Cultural Diversity and Transcultural Competence (in English)
As an international student, you may find yourself in an environment that may be unfamiliar and sometimes alienating to you: People behave differently from you are used to, misunderstandings and irritations occur that are difficult to interpret, contact and relationships run according to unfamiliar hidden rules and dynamics, and your own goals are not so easily achieved as usual. This makes life in a new environment sometimes interesting and instructive, but often also exhausting and stressful. This transcultural training is intended to help you understand cultural differences and further develop transcultural skills to make everyday life in Germany successful and even more pleasant.
What you are going to experience:
- Share cultural stories: Share personal experiences and reflect on critical intercultural incidents.
- Discover our diversity: Experience how different the cultural backgrounds are in our group and find common ground.
- Perception and bias: Recognize how our behavior, judgments, and stereotypes develop—and how they can influence conflict.
- Understanding values and norms: Explore cultural values and their significance for your own thoughts and actions.
- Practical exercises: Train communication techniques and conflict resolution strategies for intercultural situations.
- Develop new thinking: Learn how transcultural learning helps you find innovative solutions to challenges.

Workshop: Self-Empowerment and social impact (in English)
This workshop gives you the chance to explore causes that you deeply care about and take next steps to make a difference. This doesn’t mean you will become a social entrepreneur tomorrow. Yet it means you are empowered to choose how you want to contribute to society with your gifts, talents and hard-earned skills from your higher education. And in doing so, find your place in society and grow professionally.
During the workshop, you will explore …
… the psychology of doing good — and how that feels in your body
… causes the world needs + you care about — and what you care about the most
… the balance between self-interest and altruism — and how this can empower you
… the world of philanthropy — and reframing the ‚bad‘ reputation of money
… how you can measure social impact — and what really counts
… ways of volunteering today and tomorrow — and the „Ehrenamt“ in Germany
… the value of networks — and how good connections bring good things
The workshop includes individual reflection, storytelling, group and partner exercises.
