Universität Hamburg offers a wide range of funding options for activities, mobilities and projects with international partners. You can find a list of our funding opportunities below.

In addition to calls for proposals that are open all year round, Universität Hamburg publishes recurring, competitive calls throughout the year.

2nd Chile-Germany Academic Forum
Founded in 2023, the initiative strengthens existing ties and establishes new collaborations between Chilean and German universities. The aim of the forum is to jointly tackle the challenges posed by the threat of climate change in an increasingly multipolar world.
The next forum will take place in Berlin from June 16 to 18, 2025 and will be hosted by Technische Universität Berlin.
Within the framework of the DAAD funding line "Eastern Partnerships", scholars, doctoral researchers and administrative staff of Eastern European partner universities can apply for funding at Universität Hamburg to expand existing contacts and establish new cooperations between the universities.

Erasmus+ Short-Term Lectureships
Financial support for teaching staff at a European partner university.
The goal of the Erasmus short-term lectureship is the internationalization of studies and teaching at Universität Hamburg and the respective European host university as well as the strengthening of interinstitutional partnerships and networks.

Erasmus+ language trips for teaching staff
Financial support for Universität Hamburg employees for English courses in other European countries.
The objectives of this program are to improve and develop teaching in English at Universität Hamburg.

Erasmus+ program for administrative staff
Financial support for Universität Hamburg employees for advanced training and continuing education measures at a European university.
Goals include international networking, professional exchange with colleagues at other European universities, the strengthening of intercultural skills, and the honing of foreign language skills.

Universität Hamburg and the University of Groningen jointly support collaborative initiatives with the aim of leading to third-party funded research, large scale collaborations, jointly authored papers as well as joint teaching activities at the advanced level (master or doctoral education).

University of Hamburg and University of Leeds have agreed to jointly support new and promising collaborative initiatives with pump-priming funds with the aim of externally funded research, larger scale collaborations, jointly authored papers, and common teaching activities at the advanced level (master's or doctoral level).

Hamburg Programme for Scholars at Risk
Universität Hamburg wants to assist researchers at risk in continuing their research career. The focus here is on academic collaboration and networking, as well as taking personal responsibility to provide collegial support in the field of research for researchers suffering persecution and oppression.
Funding to facilitate new and ongoing collaboration in research, teaching and administration, primarily with UHH’s international strategic and profile partner universities.

International Partnership Funding (IPF)
The aim of this call is to facilitate the initiation and support the continuation of collaboration in research, teaching, and administration, primarily with UHH’s international strategic and profile partner universities. In exceptional cases, cooperation with other international partner universities may be eligible for funding if it serves the strategic objectives of the faculties. The overarching goal is to foster activities at the partner university or in Hamburg that strengthen and deepen international partnerships, with a focus on creating long-term and sustainable collaborations.
The application deadline is 31 January.

International Teaching and Learning Formats
The Department of International Affairs supports concepts with an international structure within the scope of Universität Hamburg’s funding line for international teaching and learning formats (Internationale Lehr- und Lernformate, ILLF).


Hamburg - Northwestern: Seed Funding
Northwestern University (NU) and the University of Hamburg (UHH) jointly offer seed funding for collaborative projects with high potential to lead to externally funded research, larger scale collaborations, jointly authored papers and/or common teaching activities at the undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral levels.
Universität Hamburg and Lund University jointly support collaborative initiatives with the aim of leading to externally funded research, large-scale collaborations, jointly authored papers as well as common teaching activities at the advanced level (master or doctoral education).

Financial support to promote new as well as established collaborations. Projects have to involve at least partners from two of the three universities, ideally from all three. Project proposals should be in line with the respective university strategy and should contribute to the sustainability of the partnership.

Next Generation Partnerships: Thematic Networks
This funding line from the Excellence Strategy aims to support researchers at Universität Hamburg in expanding and further developing sustainable, multilateral, research-focused networks. Special focus is placed on establishing sustainable partnerships by setting up large-scale, externally funded international research projects as well as fostering doctoral and early career researchers.

The visiting fellow program uses funds from the Excellence Strategy to support international researchers who are invited by Universität Hamburg to spend a research stay of up to 2 months. The stay at Universität Hamburg should serve to prepare a joint application for a program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (fellowship or award). The planned research project should be related to a core research focus, an emerging field or a profile initiative of the Universität Hamburg or be located in a research area of the Henriette Herz Scouting Program of the Universität Hamburg.
UC Berkeley Fellowship
The Institute of European Studies of UC Berkeley (IES) and the University of Hamburg offer PhD and advanced master students the opportunity to do research for one to three months at the partner institution with special conditions. Online-Applications can be handed in between 1 and 30 November under the framework of the Central Exchange Program of the University of Hamburg.
