Dr. Alasdair Grant, Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften, Abt.: Geschichte und Kultur des Vorderen Orients (UHH)
Dr. Daphne Penna, Faculty of Law, Legal History Department (UG)
Recent scholarship has emphasized the existence of shared cultures in the late antique and early medieval Middle East and Europe. LORILS examines texts and material culture to assess to what extent a common legal culture of oath-making is visible across this milieu in the first millennium CE. The project brings together legal scholars and historians with expertise in the Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Eastern Christian worlds. By means of a roundtable and conference, LORILS will generate an accessible, co-authored Open Access publication aimed at bringing interdisciplinary research into the university classroom.
