Applying online / application documents

You can apply online to a master's program at Universität Hamburg throughout the application period.

  • Application period for summer semester: 1 December to 15 January
  • Application period for winter semester: 1 June to 15 July
  • Application period for international master's programs(see below): 15 February to 31 March

Prospective students can apply to all consecutive master's programs online, with a few exceptions. If you cannot apply online, alternative application procedures and formalities are explained in detail on the program's website in our online study guide. Information about whether master's programs commence in summer or winter semesters is also provided there.

When you apply online for a master's program, you simply send the information to Universität Hamburg electronically. Once you have filled out and electronically submitted your application, for many programs you will need to send all required documents via post or email by the application deadline to the address provided in the online application procedure. Information about individual selection procedures and specific documents can also be found online (see above).

If you applied to an international master's program between 15 February and 31 March and received a rejection letter, you can apply for another master program commencing in the winter semester in the application period beginning 1 June provided that you withdraw your application for the previous international master's program. To do so, please notify us via our contact form that you would like to withdraw your application. We will open your online application so that you delete your application and open a new one.

Exception: No documents needed

The online application procedure for some master programs does not require any documents. Selection procedures for these programs are conducted solely on the basis of your online application. Documents only need to be submitted if previous programs or degrees acquired abroad are not clearly comparable. You can find more information in the online application procedure.

International master's programs

International master's programs have a special application period. These programs (for applications to a winter semester) have an application period from 15 February to 31 March.

Applicants with disabilities or chronic diseases
