Procedures following enrollment
You have now submitted your enrollment documents and are no doubt wondering what happens next and when you will be notified that you have enrolled successfully.
This page will guide you through the next steps. First, however, you need to clarify whether you have applied to Universität Hamburg for the first time or whether you have enrolled or been enrolled previously—this includes enrollment in the Studienkolleg, junior studies, or a pre-semester preparatory course.
Have my documents been received?
Send your documents using the digital enrollment form. The link to the enrollment portal is provided in your admission letter. You can only access the form if you log into the enrollment portal with the access data from the online application. Complete the form, upload all required documents, and submit the form. When you have submitted everything, you will find an overview of your details in the section “My Data.” In this section, you can also review the documents you have uploaded and check whether everything is covered and correct. Be aware that we cannot check individual applications in advance for completeness and correctness. If you would like to submit documents at a later date, you may do so in the section “Submit further documents.” Also, be aware that documents that require submission within the enrollment period (See checklists, e.g., the complete university entrance qualification) will only be considered if they are submitted on time.
I have never been enrolled at Universität Hamburg.
Provisional enrollment
After your enrollment application has been processed, you will receive new login details for STiNE. In addition you will receive a TAN list that you will need later to register for courses. Please note: Once you have been assigned a student ID number, you will NOT be able to access your STiNE account until you receive your new login details.
If you receive new login details, that means that we have accepted your enrollment application. Enrollment is deemed complete when we have received all of your enrollment documents and your semester contribution.
Information on the provisional semester ticket, which you can receive after provisional enrollment and before final enrollment, can be found on our semester ticket website. Please note that both the provisional and the final semester ticket will only be valid from the first day of the semester onwards (i.e. 1 April and 1 October respectively).
Exception: For international master’s programs with the earlier 15 February–31 March application period, login details will be provided in July.
Paying the semester contribution
Please log into STiNE using your new STiNE login details. The payment form for the semester contribution can be found under the “Dokumente” (Documents) tab— please pay this without delay.
Submitting documents later
If you have to submit documents for enrollment later, this can delay the issuing of your certificate of enrollment. It is therefore in your own interest to submit the missing documents as soon as possible after the enrollment deadline. We recommend submitting the documents by mid-October or mid-April at the latest.
For late submissions, please use the “Submit further documents” area in the enrollment portal. If you are enrolling in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, please use our contact form.
Semester documents
If you have submitted all required documents correctly by the deadline (see the checklist: the link is provided in the notification) and paid your semester contribution, you will receive your permanent semester documents before your provisional semester documents expire.
If you have submitted all required documents in the correct form and on time and have paid the semester contribution, you will receive your enrollment certificate, a student ID card and a BAföG certificate according to §9 via STiNE. All three documents are part of the document “Online-Semesterbescheinigung” document, which is provided for download in STiNE under “Documents”.
Note: If your documents are incomplete or you pay your semester contribution shortly before the beginning of the semester, you might receive your documents after the beginning of the semester.
I am now or have previously been enrolled at Universität Hamburg.
The information here also applies if you have been enrolled in a Studienkolleg, junior studies program, or pre-semester preparatory course; it also applies if you took part in the UHHhilft program, the Open Study Program, or were an auditing student. In all above-mentioned cases, you retain your student ID number!
Provisional enrollment
If you have withdrawn for at least 1 semester between your previous studies and your new studies, you will receive a TAN list via post that you will later need to register for courses.
If you are still enrolled, you will not receive a new TAN list. As soon as you have converted your enrollment, you will see your new degree program in STiNE under the tab “Fächer-/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives). You do not have to formally withdraw; within Universität Hamburg, enrollment is converted automatically.
Your application for enrollment is deemed approved when your new degree program appears in your STiNE account. Enrollment is deemed complete when we have received all of your enrollment documents and your semester contribution.
Paying the semester contribution
Transfer your semester contribution by the deadline using your student ID number, even if no payment slip is available in your STiNE account (for more information about the contribution, account details, and deadlines, see www.uni-hamburg.de/semesterbeitrag.)
Tip: If you were enrolled at Universität Hamburg the previous semester, wait until you see the new degree program in STiNE under “Fächer/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives) before re-enrolling! Make sure, however, that you re-enroll by the deadline. This means that you should pay 2 weeks before the end of the re-enrollment period at the latest, even if the new degree program has not yet appeared in your STiNE account.
We will notify you about missing documents after the start of the semester. You will not receive any notification in advance.
Transition from bachelor’s to master’s program
If you have not yet submitted your transcript of records from your bachelor’s program, stay enrolled in your bachelor’s program; we will issue your semester documents accordingly. You have one semester to complete your bachelor’s program. You do not have to provide proof that you have completed your studies; as soon as your faculty has recorded that you have completed your studies, you will automatically be re-enrolled in the master’s program. You can submit an application for the federal student loan scheme when you receive an acceptance letter (see www.studierendenwerk-hamburg.de for information in German about the transition from a bachelor’s to a master’s program: Förderung beim Übergang vom Bachelor zum Master).
If you submitted your final record of grades for the bachelor’s program when you enrolled, you will automatically be enrolled in the master’s program and will receive proof of enrollment on the master’s program.
Please note, as well, that you will be starting your master’s program in the first semester; accordingly, you need to comply with the first-semester registration period.
Changing your subject or starting in a higher semester
There may well be an overlap between your semester re-enrollment for the previous program and enrollment in the new one; in this case, you may receive semester documents for your previous program. Don’t panic: We will update your enrollment certificate as soon as the enrollment details have been changed. You will see your new degree program in STiNE under “Fächer-/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives).
Please note that if you are changing subjects and starting in the first semester, you must comply with the first-semester registration period.
I put a foreign address in my enrollment application.
We will send you an email with your new STiNE login details and a TAN list. In STiNE you will find your student ID number and further information on paying the semester contribution. As soon as you have arrived in Germany, please inform us of your new address via the contact form.Your address will then be changed in STiNE.
