Welcome aboard!

The Professorial Appointments Unit will gladly assist you with all questions connected to your appointment and arrival at Universität Hamburg. Our Service for Newly Appointed Professors will support you in your search for suitable housing and childcare, ensuring that you and your family experience a smooth transition to Hamburg. Our newcomer activitiy "Welcome aboard" for professors is a great opportunity to meet members of the University Executive Board and talk to partners and colleagues from numerous institutions.

Event for newly appointed professors and junior research group leaders

The University’s president invites all newly appointed professors and junior research group leaders to a reception at the beginning of every semester. You will have the great opportunity to meet members of the University Executive Board and talk to partners from numerous institutions and new colleagues from all faculties.

You will receive a personal invitation.

International researchers

You or your family have come from abroad? At the Hamburg Welcome Center (HWC), a district office for newcomers to Hamburg, you and your family can register and apply for a residence permit. We will happily arrange an appointment for you with the Hamburg Welcome Center.

Start-up assistance for families

Kitas—childcare centers

From the birth of a child until school enrollment, you are eligible for up to 30 hours of childcare per week, either 5 hours of daily Kita childcare OR up to 30 hours per week of subsidized Kindertagespflege, i.e., childcare run by one nanny or a team of nannies for small groups of children, in either the nanny’s home or on separate premises. Further childcare hours require parents to pay income-based fees. We will happy to give you information about childcare centers and Hamburg’s Kita voucher system.

Schools

Hamburg offers preschool options for children from age 5. Preschoolers and children enrolled in grades 1–4 are eligible for free afternoon care until 4 pm. As of grade 6, children can attend either district schools or secondary schools called Gymnasien. We are happy to help you find the best fit for your children.

Looking for accomodation

Do you need help in finding your bearings? We are happy to assist you in selecting a city district and provide advice and support during your search for accommodation. We recommend that you contact the University Guest House directly well before you arrive in Hamburg.

Dual career

The University’s well-established contacts enable us to assist your partner in finding a suitable position with other local employers.

In 2010 the Service for Newly Appointed Professors and International Visiting Scholars joined the Dual Career Network Germany.

We are also a founding member and coordinator of the Dual Career Hamburg + der Norden founded in May 2019.
