Junior Professors
Junior professors are employed as civil servants for a fixed period of time, initially for 3 years (first phase of the junior professorship). An interim evaluation is conducted after 3 years. After a positive interim evaluation, the employment contract is extended by another 3 years (second phase of the junior professorship).
Interim evaluation
An interim evaluation is conducted after 3 years. After successfully completing this evaluation, the employment contract is extended by a further 3 years.
The interim and tenure evaluations procedure is governed by separate bylaws.
Tenure track
Junior professorships advertised with tenure track are subject to a subsequent evaluation after 6 years. After successfully completing this tenure evaluation, the junior professor is appointed to a full professorship at Universität Hamburg without a call for applications or academic search procedure.
The tenure evaluation procedure may only be commenced early (but not replaced) if a University W2 or W3 appointment is made in the second phase of the junior professorship.
