Academic Senate
Universität Hamburg is self-governed and controlled by several committees. One of the pivotal committees is the Academic Senate. It consists of nineteen members: ten professors, three academic and technical staff members, and three students.
The Academic Senate is involved in all important University decisions, e.g., the election in and out of University presidents, as well as the appointment of the University Council. It confirms vice presidents in office, issues guidelines, and elects equal opportunity commissioners and representatives for students with disabilities or chronic diseases.
The University's Academic Senate takes up a definitive position on all matters relevant to the University and exercises great authority in the creation of self-governing units at Universität Hamburg. The responsibilties of the Academic Senate are laid out in § 85 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG).
