Digitalization and sustainability
Creating transformation together
The University of Hamburg strives to address current social, economic, and global challenges and sees itself as a knowledge organization with an important role in proactively shaping the future of society with society itself.
In this sense, the topics of sustainability and digitalization are cross-sectoral tasks for the whole University, tackling this twin transformation as a whole.
Based in strategy

As early as 2010, the University of Hamburg was one of the first German universities to set its sights on sustainability in all its facets. As part of the excellence competition, it added digitalization to its structural approach. Both topics became fixed parts of the strategic approach of the University of Hamburg with the appointment of the chief sustainability officer (CSO). It is also clearly reflected in the University of Excellence motto: “A flagship university: Innovating and cooperating for a sustainable future in a digital age.”
Creating and responding to momentum

The University sees itself as an intermediary between academia, research, and practice. It aims to establish itself internationally as an effective driving force in the fields of digitalization and sustainability, both through excellent research and teaching and the design of its administrative processes.
What does “twin transformation” mean for the University of Hamburg?
Chief Sustainability Officer Prof. Dr. Laura Marie Edinger-Schons and Chief Digital Officer Prof. Dr. Sebastian Gerling explain the concept of the twin transformation and its implementation in this video.
Sustainability
Sustainability activities and projects are developed, coordinated, implemented, and managed by the Sustainability Office. These focus particularly on creating a participative approach to collaboration with all University members.

Digitalization
The Digital Office—working with all participants, such as the Regional Computing Center and the Hub of Computing and Data Science—developed the University’s digitalization strategy and monitors the implementation of documented measures.
