The new center for young, science-based start-ups in the field of deep technology is now open. In addition to modern offices, founders from the fields of physics and biophysics will have access to complex laboratories and workshops for developing innovative, high tech products at Start-Up Labs Bahrenfeld, which is located on what will become Science City Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. A joint project of DESY, Universität Hamburg, and the City of Hamburg, “Start-Up Labs Bahrenfeld supports innovative breakthroughs on the long journey from basic research to successful market entry,” explains Jetta Frost, vice president of Universität Hamburg. Tenants include, for example, the laser technology specialist Cycle GmbH and X-Spectrum GmbH, which builds high-end detectors for research.
At the official opening, Katharina Fegebank, the senator for science, discussed the benefits of Start-Up Labs Bahrenfeld for the Hamburg Metropolitan Region and said, “It is exciting to see how, in the cooperation between DESY and Universität Hamburg, new space for top-level research and new forms of exchange for innovations will be created at the new Start-Up Labs in the future. Bright minds will be able to develop their ideas, implement them, and later turn them into spin-offs and innovative products. This is crucial for scientific transfer and also for economic growth with innovation as a driver of progress and answers to the most pressing questions of the future. Thus, here at the future Science City Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, pioneering research in the field of lasers and photonics will also see the development of concrete products and services in the coming years, which we will all encounter in our everyday lives in the future or will improve our lives.”
At the opening, Hamburg’s mayor, Dr. Peter Tschentscher; Prof. Dr. Helmut Dosch, director of DESY in Hamburg; and Prof. Dr. Jetta Frost, vice president of Universität Hamburg, ceremoniously turned on the lights. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region has a new center for science entrepreneurship and innovation!
