The future responses of oceans to climate change are poorly understood but likely involve major tipping points. Our initiative aims at a better understanding of marine ecosystem responses to climate change by using the geological record from past periods of global warming. We plan to use the combination of X-ray microcomputed tomography and trace element analyses on foraminifera, which is one important marine calcium carbonate producer, to generate time-series of environmental change. Our planned research will benefit from the integration of synchrotron facilities at DESY and MAXIV as it focuses on material science applications within marine geoscience and climate research.
