Erasmus / exchange programs
Students at partner universities can study for one or two semesters at Universität Hamburg as part of an ERASMUS or direct exchange program.
Applying
You can apply as an ERASMUS exchange student with the ERASMUS coordinator at your home university. If your application is successful, your home university will nominate you as an exchange student to Universität Hamburg.

Planning your stay
After you are nominated by Universität Hamburg, you can find out more about planning your ERASMUS stay. Please contact the responsible program reps at your future host school.
If you have questions about planning your stay as part of a direct exchange program, please contact the responsible coordinators in the Department of International Affairs.
Students who want to take part in a school exchange can find more information from the responsible contact person in the schools.
Visas
If you want to know whether you need a visa to enter Germany, check out the list of countries with a visa requirement from the Foreign Office.
Please make sure you apply for your visa in good time with the responsible German foreign representatives, as it can take between 2 and 3 months to process!
Important information: please note that a three-month Schengen visa ("tourist visa") cannot be extended for study or research purposes in Germany!

Enrolling at Universität Hamburg
You can enroll using the University's online application portal. Please make sure to choose the right program when enrolling. The degree you choose has to be named "Guest program for international students (Erasmus and Freemover)" . You can enroll from 1 June to 15 September for a winter semester and from 1 December to 15 March for a summer semester. No paper submissions are required.
Proof of your health insurance is required for your enrollment. You must therefore contact a German health insurance company as soon as possible after receiving the invitation letter and either take out student insurance there or be exempted so that your insurance status is reported to Universität Hamburg.
