Discrimination Complaints Office for Students (pursuant to the AGG)
We work towards making Universität Hamburg a place of study free of discrimination. Use the contact form to report existing cases of discrimination falling under the AGG (see “Legal”) at Universität Hamburg. In case of a complaint, we encourage all parties to provide their own description of the situation in question. Where necessary, we may offer further assistance, for example, by moderating conflict-resolution discussions. In particularly serious cases, we recommend to the Executive University Board of Universität Hamburg that it should mandate consequences under the relevant labor law.

Legal:
According to Section 3 subsection 4 sentence 1 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG), universities must ensure that all courses of studies are free from discrimination. By signing the Diversity Charter, Universität Hamburg also pledged to foster an organizational culture based on mutual respect and appreciation of each and every individual.
As Section 13 subsection 1 AGG (Rights of Appeal) also applies to students under Section 3 subsection 4 sentence 4 HmbHG, Universität Hamburg is required to establish an appropriate complaints office for students.
Under the AGG, the Discrimination Complaints Office for Students is intended to prevent or put an end to discrimination against students based on “race or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, age or sexual orientation” (see Section 1 AGG) at Universität Hamburg.
The complaint does not have to be lodged in a specific form or within a set period of time. Submit your complaint to us using the contact form. There is an exception, however, if you intend to seek compensation or reparation in accordance with Section 15 Compensation and Damages subsection 1 or 2 AGG. In this case, you must lodge your complaint in writing within 2 months.
When exercising the right to complain, you and all involved witnesses are protected against possible discrimination by the employer through Section 16 Prohibition of Victimisation AGG.
