Strategies and measures against discrimination
The University develops and establishes strategies and measures for nondiscriminatory treatment of all members. The University of Hamburg is committed to equal opportunity and removing disadvantage; has firmly based its Antidiscrimination Directive and directive for protection against sexualized discrimination, harassment, and violence on antidiscrimination ideals; provides information about the legal options; and offers qualified counseling centers for those affected.
Advice at the Antidiscrimination Center
Through the Antidiscrimination Center, the University of Hamburg offers specialized advice to those who have experienced discrimination. In addition to one-to-one talks, the center offers support and advice in regard to mediation talks, complaints, and other interventions. The center does not offer case-by-case legal reviews; it does, however, provide general information on the General Act on Equal Treatment (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG), the University of Hamburg’s guidelines, and the discrimination complaints process.
Its advice is independent (see Section 5 of the University of Hamburg Antidiscrimination Directive and is guided by the quality standards of the Antidiskriminierungsverband Deutschland (German antidiscrimination association). The antidiscrimination advice provided by the center represents the complainant, is confidential, and is free of charge.
We adhere to a horizontal working approach and, therefore, an intersectional working perspective that cuts across target groups and categories and focuses on the numerous types of discrimination and their interconnections.
When dealing with discrimination, we reflect on our own positioning. The antidiscrimination advising team is interdisciplinary and works closely with various other subject advisory panels within and outside the University of Hamburg.
The Discrimination Complaints Offices for Students and Employees (pursuant to the AGG) are located under the umbrella of the Antidiscrimination Center and are happy to provide information on their procedures and processes.
