The Power of Language ‒ The Language of Power
Societal discourse is becoming increasingly sharp. At the same time, we observe in debates on key societal issues a discrepancy between facts and arguments on one hand, and opinions and hearsay on the other. These debates are framed by a tendency towards the dehumanisation of public discourse. Manipulation and persuasion are omnipresent in the media. They alter—both loudly and subtly—our perceptions of the world around us, our everyday behaviour, and our willingness to confront this contradictory world. The power of language is at work: the respect for others, and for human life itself, is at stake.
This lecture series brings together individuals who refuse to accept this situation and instead strive through research and action to expose the mechanisms of these anti-democratic practices alternative approaches to reclaim standards of a critical and respectful culture of debate, both on a large scale and a small scale
