The University of Hamburg uses proven internal procedures to continuously assess its plans and measures for big cross-cutting issues like diversity and internationalization. The audit certifies that the University of Hamburg offers a broad range of services and structures that allow all staff and students to better balance family and care duties with the challenges of a career, academia, and studying. In 2010, the University of Hamburg was successfully audited for the first time. As part of the regular cycle of quality assurance, the Family Office was established in 2012. The University of Hamburg has held family-friendly higher education audit certification since 2020.

The University of Hamburg understands diversity as an interdisciplinary cross-cutting issue. All students and staff should have the opportunity to get actively involved and have the same opportunities for education, work, and careers. In 2019, the University of Hamburg was the first university to receive the Vielfalt Gestalten certification in recognition of its measures and the introduction of diversity management.

The international approach to education, studying, research, and administration is one of the strategic focuses of the University of Hamburg. The approach comprises numerous different measures, based on recommendations from the Internationlisierung der Hochschulen audit conducted in 2010/11 by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). The advances and further development of the process was successfully reaudited in 2015–2018.

A pool of cargo bikes and rental bikes for staff, initiatives like Biking to Work, an annual bicycle action day, or individual route advice: there are a range of services at the University of Hamburg to encourage people to use bicycles. This all led the German National Cyclists’ Association (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club, ADFC) to award the University of Hamburg the silver seal in its EU-wide bicycle-friendly employer certification for the first time in 2023.

The sustainability at universities audit conducted by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) systematically supports the ongoing development of university sustainability strategies, goals, and activities. The University of Hamburg, the University of Technology in Chemnitz, the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and Philipps-Universität Marburg have been chosen for the pilot phase.
