They study medicine, law, computer science and business administration, but also smaller subjects such as Japanese studies, sign language interpreting, oceanography, midwifery or the timber industry: a total of 243 students were awarded the Deutschlandstipendium yesterday. The award ceremony 2023 could now take place again in presence.
The "Deutschlandstipendium" (Germany Scholarship) takes into account not only academic achievement, but also aspects of the individual's educational biography, social commitment and personal circumstances. "You are a great performer, show great commitment, take on responsibility, are incredibly creative and innovative, and in some cases master difficult life situations brilliantly and in an exemplary manner. Keep up the good work!" said University President Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren in his welcoming speech. This year, for the first time, students who fled Ukraine in 2022 will be sponsored. More than half of the scholarship recipients have an international or migration background.
The Deutschlandstipendium scholarships are provided by a total of 90 companies, foundations, associations and private individuals. The federal government and the city of Hamburg double every euro donated by non-governmental sponsors. The Deutschlandstipendium at the University of Hamburg thus has a volume of almost one million euros. Students receive 300 euros per month. In addition, there is a varied accompanying program that brings sponsors, students and alumni into conversation with each other, thus creating a dialog and a network.
Further information can be found on the Deutschlandstipendium website.
