New to the university? Everything you need to know!
To have a clear head when your courses begin, it's best to take care of the most important tasks beforehand. Almost everything can be done online, but for the library card and university Wi-Fi, you'll need to visit the campus, for example, during the PIASTA Welcome Week.
Completing enrollment (Immatrikulation)
How Step 1, online enrollment, works in your case depends on whether you're coming to the Universität Hamburg for an exchange program lasting one or two semesters or for a degree program, such as a BA, MA, or State Exam. Steps 2, health insurance, and Step 3, semester contribution, are the same for everyone.
Step 1: Online Enrollment for Exchange Students
Erasmus and other exchange students enroll at Universität Hamburg by completing the online application in the STiNE portal. The online application is available from December 1st to March 1st for the summer semester and from June 1st to September 1st for the winter semester.
- Create an applicant account ➔ Bewerberaccount anlegen (create an applicant account)
- You will receive your login details by email.
- Log in with your new login details on the same website and select your field of study and the application process for "Guest Programs for International Students (Erasmus and Freemover)".
- Please provide your coordinator's institute address in your online application.
- Fill out the application and submit it electronically.
Step 1: Online Enrollment for Degree Students (BA, MA, and State Exam)
Step 1: Online Enrollment for Degree Students (BA, MA, and State Exam)
- Your Zulassungsbescheid (notice of admission) from Universität Hamburg states your enrollment deadline, which you must meet. The deadline usually ends seven days after receiving your notice of admission. If you don't enroll on time, you will lose your study place.
- The online enrollment in your STiNE applicant account is straightforward: You fill out everything online and upload all the required documents.
- The documents you need to upload vary depending on nationality, field of study, etc. For example, international bachelor's students must upload proof of German language skills in addition to their higher education entrance qualification, and for certain programs like medicine, sports, or teaching, additional proof is required.
- Here you can find the checklists from the Campus Center.
- After your online enrollment, you will receive an automatic email confirmation. If you don't receive an email, check your spam folder. If you still can't find an email, contact the Campus-Center.

Step 2: Health Insurance
- Universität Hamburg requires a report of your insurance status from a German public health insurance provider.
- This report can be submitted after the enrollment deadline. For full enrollment and final semester documents (valid for a semester, unlike the provisional semester documents, which are only valid for one month), the university must receive the report. Therefore, take care of this as soon as possible, so you receive your Deutschland-Semesterticket on time.
- If you are insured with a German public health insurance provider, ask your provider to report your status to Universität Hamburg. You can often do this online.
- If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or are insured with a German private health insurance provider, ask a German public health insurance provider to notify Universität Hamburg that you are exempt from mandatory insurance. There are offices of public health insurance providers near the campus. You can go in person or contact them via email and handle everything while you are still abroad. In the case of the EHIC, the health insurance provider will need a scan of the EHIC and your passport.

Step 3: Pay/Transfer the Semester Contribution
Step 3: Pay/Transfer the Semester Contribution
- The semester contribution for the summer semester 2024 is €332. (There are exceptions, for example, Erasmus students pay a lower contribution.)
- The semester contribution is not a tuition fee; it includes, for example, a Deutschland-Semesterticket for public transport.
- After processing your online enrollment, the Campus Center will send you your new user ID by email. In your STiNE account under ➔ Studying ➔ Documents, you will find the amount you need to pay and the bank details of Universität Hamburg.

Events for first-year students
Here's an overview of the start your studies:
- Two weeks before the start of lectures: PIASTA Welcome Week for all new students.
- One week before the start of lectures: OEs – Orientation Units for all new students in their respective fields of study. Execptions: Some fields of study have an earlier date for their OE, and some master´s programs do not offer an OE in the summer semester.
- One week before the start of lectures: Course registration via STiNE for first-year students under the guidance of OE tutors.
- April or mid-October: Start of Lectures and seminars for your field of study.

- City and campus tours,
Both digital and in-person

- Participation is voluntary.
Registration Start: March 1st (summer semester), September 1st (winter semester)

What is the OE (Orientierungseinheit)?
- The Orientation Unit (OE) for your program usually takes place after the PIASTA Welcome Week, during the week before the start of the semester. (There are exceptions where the PIASTA Welcome Week and the OE overlap, or where master's programs only offer an OE before the winter semester.)
- Only students in your program participate in the OE. Unlike the PIASTA Welcome Week, which is for all students and has limited spots for some events, the OE for each program has enough space for all events.
- The OE is the best opportunity to meet the other new students in your program. Usually, many social activities are organized.
- You'll receive an introduction to the structure of your program and learn how to register for your first-semester courses in STiNE. That's why the STiNE registration deadline for first-year students is during OE week.
- Your OE is organized by experienced students (OE tutors) who know all the information about your field of study and are happy to answer any questions.
- Participation is strongly recommended.
- There's usually a set weekly program for all students in a program.
- Depending on your program, registration varies: Usually, you simply attend the welcome event on the first OE day and are assigned to an OE group.

What should I participate in as an exchange student?
- Exchange students are warmly invited to the PIASTA Welcome Week and are welcome to attend the OE for their department. However, the OE is intended for first-year students and not specifically for exchange students. Nonetheless, you can learn a lot about your department.
- For Erasmus students, most faculties offer a welcome and introduction as well as a buddy program for exchange students. You can get detailed information from your coordinator: Overview of Erasmas Contacts.
What should I do if I missed the PIASTA Welcome Week or the OE?
- The websites for the PIASTA Welcome Week and the OEs usually have presentations from the info sessions and other documents available.
- If you can't attend the OE, familiarize yourself with your examination regulations and study regulations (subject specific provisions) , create your timetable based on these, and register for your courses via STiNE. Keep in mind that the course registration period for first-year students is during OE week. Be sure to contact your Study Office if you have any questions.
Study Offices
- The study offices of the departments are responsible for entering your academic achievements in your STiNE account. They are the first point of contact for your questions about modules, academic achievements, exams, and much more.
Getting your semester documents and Deutschland-Semesterticket
The semester documents consist of:
- Enrollment certificate (in the STiNE account under "Documents")
- Student ID (in the STiNE account under "Documents")
- TAN list, which you'll need later for course registration (sent by email)

- You can access the ticket portal via the Universität Hamburg website.
- Click "Login" on the ticket portal and log in with your new Universität Hamburg user ID.
- Clicking on the ticket will take you to the control view. There, you can also move your ticket to your smartphone wallet app. You should have "automatic updates" enabled here, so your ticket is up to date in case of a check.
- If only the provisional ticket is displayed, it means that your health insurance report and/or the semester contribution is still missing.
Provisional and final semester documents/Deutschland-Semesterticket
- After online enrollment, you will receive your provisional semester documents (valid only for April or October) and a one-month Deutschland-Semesterticket (valid only for April or October).
- Once the health insurance report and the semester contribution have been received by Universität Hamburg, you will receive your final semester documents and your Deutschland-Semesterticket for the whole semester.
- Receiving the final semester documents also means your enrollment is complete. To receive your final semester documents on time, you should take care of everything at least three weeks to two weeks before the provisional documents expire!
For issues downloading the Deutschland-Semesterticket, contact S-Bahn Hamburg's customer service: sbhh.kundensupport"AT"deutschebahn.com
