Language cafés

¡Hola! Ciao! Bonjour! Are you learning a language and looking for an opportunity to practice and speak outside of the classroom? If so, we invite you to visit one of our language cafés. Like a café, a language café is a place you can simply drop by: order a tea or coffee, join the others at the table, and in no time at all you’ll be chatting in a comfortable setting. The sessions are led by native speaker volunteers. They’ll be sure to get the conversation going. And if you can’t think of the right word, they’ll be glad to help.

What languages do the language cafés offer and when do they take place?

Language cafés always begin in the third week of the lecture period.

The dates and times are listed in UHH Join from the first week of the lecture period. Native speakers are also students and therefore can only set times for the cafés once they know their own course schedules. Please be understanding.

We generally offer the following languages each semester:

  • German (Beginners and Intermediate)
  • German (Intermediate and Advanced)
  • English
  • Spanish
  • French

The languages offered depend on whether there are native speakers who wish to volunteer with PIASTA as language café coordinators.

How can I register?

You can sign up for a language café via UHH Join and then attend the following weekly meet-ups.

How can I become a language café coordinator?

We welcome committed native speakers who would like to help students learn their language. Feel free to contact us even if you do not have prior knowledge of teaching.

How does it work?

  • Contact us, and we will make an appointment to get to know each other.
  • Then, before the lecture period begins, you take part in a University Language Center workshop for tips on heading a language café and a PIASTA workshop on organizational matters.
  • Once you have learned how to manage a language café, you can get started.
  • Language cafés take place weekly from the third week of the lecture period.

If you would like to be a volunteer coordinator for a language café in your native language, send an email to piasta-sprachen"AT"uni-hamburg.de.

Leading a language café can be recognized as Component C of the Certificate Intercultural Competence (CIC).

You can sign up for the language café using the booking app UHH Join. 
You can sign up anytime during the semester.
