In 2015, the University conferred the first 26 scholarships. This number has only increased from year to year. Today, 329 students from all areas of the University enjoy funding. This makes the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship program the University’s strongest on-campus scholarship program of all EU-funded Erasmus scholarship programs.
In the face of current societal challenges, this year's ceremony is being held under the motto: All Hands on Deck—Taking Responsibility for the Future Together. “Our focus is on how democracy, peace, and a healthy ecosystem can be fortified through communal engagement. The Deutschlandstipendium recipients and their providers contribute with their social committment to a resilient civil society,” says Dr. Andrea Schultze, head of the Deutschlandstipendium office at the University of Hamburg.
The scholarships are possible thanks to 86 non-state providers. Businesses, foundations, associations, and private patrons take part in this program for students by earmarking a monthly €150 donation per scholarship to the University. Due to matching funds from the federal government and the state of Hamburg, students receive €300 per month.
Funding is granted, regardless of subject area, to especially talented and committed students who have to navigate “educational hurdles.” Funders can choose degree programs. For students and their providers, the University also offers an extensive fringe program with ample opportunity for networking and exchange.

The new recipients will be greeted and awarded their scholarships in the form of a certificate. The University president, Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, will open proceedings with a welcoming speech. The prize-winning musicians Anqi Lai and Soohyun Jee, both scholarship holders at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, will be performing at the ceremony. During the reception afterwards, sponsors and funding recipients will have time to talk to each other.
Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, president of the University of Hamburg: “The development of the Deutschlandstipendium at Universität Hamburg—University of Excellence is impressive, and it is more than just an academic scholarship: it is an instrument of social commitment and contributes to forging links between us as a flagship university and the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Opening to the general public is a central goal, and the scholarship contributes significantly to the sustainability of our society by supporting talented young people and, thus, educating the specialists of tomorrow. I would especially like to thank all of the providers, because it is owing to their commitment that in the last 10 years, almost €6.5 million could fund highly talented students and the number of recipients grew.”
