A total of 22 universities in Germany applied for the prize. Universität Hamburg was among the 3 award-winners. The Haus der Lehre was a first for the University as a new building’s contractor.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Sengstock initiated the Haus der Lehre–Light & Schools. The head of the Institute of Laser Physics wanted to create an extraordinary learning site where young people could gain insight into physics. His goal was to foster interest in and an understanding of the natural sciences beyond the classroom and report cards.
The building’s construction is a big help: the extensive glass facade of the one-story building on Luruper Chaussee piques the interest of passersby and gives them a glimpse into science. Transparent labs enable others to take a peek. Thanks to cutting-edge equipment, students can delve into experimental work and current research with their own trials. The teaching lab is funded by the Centre for Ultrafast Imaging: Cluster of Excellence Advanced Imaging of Matter. The architectural firm hammeskrause was responsible for the building design.
The German architectural prize for university buildings recognizes exemplary university buildings (single buildings or ensembles) with special architectural features or design that involves exemplary use of historical building structures. The buildings expertly combine aesthetic and functional features and are attractive to both students and teaching staff. At the same time, they observe ecological, economic, and sociocultural standards and contribute positively to the design of public space. Awards are given to building contractors and designers.
