In this project, researchers in the fields of oceanography, meteorology, and mathematics will cooperate closely. In the first funding phase, they examined turbulence and waves in the atmosphere and ocean. These physical processes—even at the smallest scale of just a few centimeters—are closely connected to global winds and currents and thus, they need to be accurately represented in climate models. In the second funding phase, the research will focus primarily on improving climate models and their prognoses, based on the consistent representation of the processes.
The TRR covers Hamburg, Bremen, and Rostock and will be coordinated at the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) at Universität Hamburg. Other partners are: Jacobs University Bremen, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Goethe University Frankfurt, the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Rostock, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde at the University of Rostock, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Centre for Materials and Coastal Research. A project extension of 4 years is possible.
