Dr. h.c. Eckart Krause has long been considered the “memory” of the University of Hamburg. On 13 November, he celebrated his 80th birthday.
In 1983, Eckart Krause began on his own to create the Hamburg Library of University History, which later became the Center for the History of Universität Hamburg. As the departmental planner for history, he coordinated the major research project Hochschulalltag im “Dritten Reich”: Die Hamburger Universität 1933-1945 from 1983 to 1991. To date, this has been the most extensive work that a German university has done on its National Socialist history. He is currently is co-editor of the 4- volume publication 100 jahre Universität Hamburg, which will soon be completed.
Eckart Krause has received several awards for his work. In 2008 (together with Prof. Dr. Rainer Nicolaysen), he received the Max-Brauer-Preis der Toepfer-Stiftung F.V.S. When he retired in 2008, he received the silver University Medal. The Faculty of Humanities honored him in 2013 with the commemorative publication “Living University History” and in 2015 with an honorary doctorate.
