On the third floor of the former Karstadt Sport building, located directly across from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, there will be a temporary open campus between October and December 2023. An initiative of Universität Hamburg’s Knowledge Exchange Agency, the campus enables students and teachers to assess locally relevant sustainability issues together. The public is invited to talk, play along, experiment, and create!
Outside the conventional university spaces and located in Mönckebergstraße in Hamburg city center, Universität Hamburg has initiated a platform for encounters, controversies, and transformative learning. Seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and many other events are open to visitors.
All in all, a cross-section of Hamburg’s creative industry can be seen over 8,000 square meters on 6 floors in the empty department store. While the middle floors house mainly young art, the third floor is home to the University’s photography exhibition Alltagswelten des Klimawandels (Everyday worlds of climate change) and an exhibition on the topic of algae. An interactive architecture game challenges visitors to design environmentally friendly cities, while the Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society’s giant climate-based concentration game allows them to exercise their memory.
The cluster of excellence also offers sociology-based taster seminars. On 9–10 November, members of the public can participate in 3 seminars led by Prof. Dr. Anita Engels
In addition, on 25 October, the University will host an open discussion on the question of what climate has to do with colonialism. This will be followed by a lecture on the relationship between trade unions and the climate movement. In November, “Arbeit; nichts als Arbeit” (Work; nothing but work) will address the importance of work in society and, in December, the question of what influence social background has on career progression.
The department store is open from 10 am to 12 midnight, Thursday–Saturday, and from 10 am to 9 pm, Sunday–Wednesday. Find information on the Jupiter Campus and the current events calendar at https://jupiter-campus.blogs.uni-hamburg.de/.
