Remain in academia or enter the private sector? Set up your own business, go into research management, or strive for a professorship at a university of applied sciences? The possibilities after you do a doctorate are manifold and it can be hard to make a timely decision about the next step. The Hamburg Research Academy’s Karrieresprung event helps doctoral researchers and people who already have a doctorate with tips and ideas.
Career plans are rarely a matter of following a straight and narrow path. Progress is generally piecemeal and you may have sudden, unexpected opportunities. Naturally, this kind of uncertainty can cause anxiety at first.
“I have gotten used to the idea and even learned to embrace the fact that you know what you know when you know it,” says Dr. Ijad Madisch. The virologist is a co-founder of the ResearchGate network and he was also a member of the German government’s Digital Summit from 2018 to 2021. In his keynote speech for the HRA Karrieresprung, he will provide interesting insight into his unusual career path and his professional experience as a researcher and CEO. His path shows that entering the non-university labor market does not automatically mean taking leave of research.
To help doctoral researchers and recent graduates of doctoral programs plan their next steps, the Hamburg Research Academy is hosting an event at the Design Offices in Hammerbrook on 10 October 2024 from 10 am to 2 pm. Participants can put together their own program, in addition to attending Madisch’s talk.
At Career Stories, roughly 30 guests will use the world café format to discuss their individual careers since doing their doctorate. The interactive Opportunities Arena is an opportunity to make direct contact to companies and service institutions; discover new professional prospects; and find out about helpful resources. There were will be 2 sessions (Some Facts about the Non-Academic Job Market; Prototyping Your Way to Your Job) with helpful tips about searching and applying for jobs. There will also be a CV review and an opportunity to get head shots.
Interested doctoral researchers and visitors who already have a doctorate can sign up on the Hamburg Research Academy pages. The entire event is free. These pages also offer an overview of the entire program and all guests, companies, and institutions attending Karrieresprung.
