Welcome! Representatives of the University of Leeds visited Universität Hamburg on 17 April 2024. The 2 universities have been strategic partners since 2023 and used the latest meeting to get additional collaborations off the ground in addition to evaluating ongoing projects.
The delegation from the university based in northern England—which has around 40,000 enrolled students and is one of the top research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom—included senior figures. President Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren welcomed, among others, Prof. Dr. Hai-Sui Yu, interim vice-chancellor and president of the University of Leeds, and Prof. Dr. Manuel Barcia, dean of global development in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures at the University of Leeds and member of the Universität Hamburg Internationalization Committee.
Universität Hamburg and the University of Leeds have been linked since 2021 through a formal collaboration that includes a central student exchange among other things. In 2023, they signed a strategic partnership, under which 7 joint research projects in the humanities, the natural and social sciences, medicine, and informatics have already been established. At the meeting, the universities’ lead researchers presented the current status of their work and discussed funding possibilities for continuing the projects.
They also discussed how collaboration in studies and teaching as well as joint research in the natural sciences and humanities, in sustainability, and in the Knowledge Equity Network can be strengthened further. The Knowledge Equity Network was founded by the University of Leeds, and Universität Hamburg has been a member since 2023. Another focus of the visit was the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) project, which sees 9 European universities—among them, Universität Hamburg—work together in the field of global health. Our guests from the University of Leeds met with Universität Hamburg’s EUGLOH Team to get an update on the project.
