Fostering interdisciplinary exchange on the topic of global health is one of the major aims of the EUGLOH alliance. The EUGLOH student board at the University of Hamburg invited fellow students to do just that at an event held at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) on 4 July.
Based on interactive formats such as science slams or journal clubs, in which scientists present their own research or discuss recent scientific publications, the student board’s Global Health Academy offered students the opportunity to each present a topic related to global health in which they conduct research themselves or have a particular interest.
Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of global health and the diverse fields of study represented in the EUGLOH student board, students presented research topics ranging from the treatment of neglected tropical diseases in Madagascar to an evaluation of renewable energy plants in the Sápmi region in northern Europe.
Pia Rausche, a PhD student in the field of global health epidemiology, presented her work with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine on implementing a primary health care screening approach for female genital schistosomiasis, a chronic gynecological condition caused by infection with a water-borne parasite. “It is very interesting to get input towards my work,” she said, adding that it was particularly valuable to receive feedback from students with different areas of expertise and to have practice “explaining your research topic in a language that other fields can also understand.”
The students’ presentations sparked further discussion and debate on topics such as access and environmental impacts as they relate to global health. The student board intends to continue this interdisciplinary exchange with additional Global Health Academy sessions and other events currently being planned for the coming semester.
