Antisemitism has no place at the University of Hamburg
The University of Hamburg rejects antisemitism and is actively committed to the protection of Jewish life and culture. All the more so for being centrally located in the Grindel neighborhood and the University’s own activities under the National Socialists.
Especially since the horrific attacks by the Hamas on 7 October 2023, the University community is focused on ensuring that Jewish students, staff, and guests at the University can feel completely safe and secure.
University responsibility and approach
The University of Hamburg sees itself as an international place of academic exchange and discourse and rejects all forms of discrimination, violence, hate campaigns, and contemptuous speech.
Academic freedom and freedom of speech
The University stands for academic freedom in research and teaching and for freedom of speech based on our free and democratic order. We jointly maintain a communication culture defined by attentive and respectful interaction. There is no place for antisemitism, racism, hate, and contemptuous speech at our University.
Research and teaching: Preventing and combating antisemitism
The University of Hamburg is actively committed to raising awareness about antisemitism, for instance with regular events and training related directly or indirectly to antisemitism and fighting it, such as our Awareness Weeks.
Important advice centers and contacts: Antidiscrimination Center
The University of Hamburg offers various antidiscrimination advice centers and points of contact for students and staff in need of help. The Antidiscrimination Center(antidiskriminierung"AT"uni-hamburg.de), which is responsible for addressing antisemitic incidents, plays an important role.
Taking a stance and action against vandalism
The staff of property management have been sensitized and instructed to remove any impermissible handouts or graffiti. The University condemns criminal damage in the strongest possible terms and will respond swiftly and decidedly by filing a criminal complaint with the police.
