Family life on campus
There are many services and facilities which make family life on campus easier, such as changing tables and nursing rooms, child-friendly cafeterias, student dorms for families, and free-time activities located directly on campus.
If you know of other parent-child facilities or changing tables which we haven't listed here, don't hesitate to contact us!

A clear overview of the most important topics is offered for each target group. Looking for somewhere particular? Let the app guide you around campus! Click on the family icon for the details of all family-friendly locations on campus—from childcare and advising services to diaper-changing and nursing facilities. Children's University Hamburg
Every fall, children between eight and twelve years old can attend the University over a period of six weeks. Real professors come to the Audimax to answer questions like "Where does wind come from?" or "What was Ötzi doing in the mountains?" For more information about the Children's University and the current course catalog, please see www.kinderuni-hamburg.de!
The University's scientific collections help empower kids
Within the framework of the initiative "Culture is Strength. Education Alliances" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), children get a chance to explore Hamburg's museums and realize ideas on their own. Two of our University collections succeeded with their application projects in the national contest:
- The Loki Schmidt House—Museum for Useful Plants of Universität Hamburg
- and the Museum of Medical History Hamburg at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)
In 2014 the University of Hamburg introduced its Center for Collections and Museums. Ever since, the center has coordinated numerous educational projects like the empowering young people initiative, and has strongly been promoting the implementation of similar projects. Thus, our valuable scientific collections will further contribute to education, research, and teaching purposes.
Child-friendly cafeterias
- Furnishings and equipment (children's corner, high chairs, changing tables)
The cafeterias run by Studierendenwerk Hamburg provide various types of high chairs. The cafeteria of the Studierendenhaus also has its very own children's corner, with toys and room for baby carriages or prams. - YoungsterCard
Children up to the age of twelve and whose parents are enrolled at the University of Hamburg, the HAW, HafenCity Universität (HCU) or the TU Harburg can eat for free at cafeterias run by Studierendenwerk. Parents merely need to apply at the cashier's for a YoungsterCard (using valid proof of enrollment and your child's birth certificate) or sign online form (PDF, german only). Just show this when you eat at the cafeteria.
University Sports for pregnant women, families, and children
University Sports at Universität Hamburg has a special sports program for children between the ages of 1 and roughly 11, with or without accompanying parents. There are also courses for pregnant women.
Find information about current courses, costs, and occupancy on the pages of University Sports.
Toy Boxes
Students and staff might have to bring their children to the campus or the office for many reasons: Perhaps the childcare provider is closed for the day, there is an outbreak of lice at the kindergarten, the nanny has to cancel, a child has just recovered from an illness but is not ready to return to school, or a guest lecturer needs to bring children along over the weekend. To ease the situation for parents and children, we provide portable toy boxes (sponsored by the University's Equal Opportunity Unit). You can borrow one at any of the locations listed below.
