History of the University
History of the University
Our Center, a central institution of the University located in the Main Building, is dedicated to the history of universities, science, and scholarship, with a special emphasis on the history of Universität Hamburg.
What we offer:
- information about specific topics related to university history
- advice and strategic support for research projects
- historical campus tours
We also edit and publish the Universität Hamburg series Hamburger Beiträge zur Wissenschaftgeschichte (a scholarly series on academic history), which currently contains twenty-two volumes.
Hamburg Library of University History
The Center also houses the Hamburg Library of University History, which has over 20,000 books, special prints, and copies of articles on the history of German-language universities as well as specific academic fields—all indexed in the Campus Catalog. There are also more than 500 files containing material on individuals and specific topics in the University's history, including 10,000 newspaper articles, and over 40 files housing student flyers dating back to 1967.
The reference library is open to the public.
It is used by students, PhD candidates, researchers, and University staff as well as alumni, members of the public, Hamburg citizens and institutions, the press, publishing houses, and other universities from Germany and abroad.
