Since its origins in the American press’ comic strips at the end of the 19th century, comics have been a global cultural phenomenon, an artistic and industrial production deeply informed by its circulation from country to country, continent to continent. This is more true today than ever, as evidenced by the existence of Spanish superheroes, Latin American graphic novels à la bande dessinée and mangaesque love stories between German-speaking kawaii boys that can be found in bookstores.
This International Symposium, organized by the Institut für Romanistik and the Arbeitsstelle für Graphische Literatur at the Universität Hamburg with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, is intended as a space for academic work where researchers can exchange and discuss this cultural phenomenon from a variety of approaches, from Romance literature studies to social sciences. In short, as much or more than other objects of print culture, the study of comics in their international transit reveals the amount of symbolic work involved; that to circulate and translate is to transform, and that these transformations can even transcend different media.
