Christmas Caroling
Just one look into all these delighted faces showed us what a huge success our little Christmas party on December 5th, 2014 has been.
Many, many German and international students and staff members came by to get into the Christmas spirit together. We didn’t count exactly, but there must have been around 150-200 people. What we do know is that all seats were taken and more chairs would have been welcomed. We’re happy you enjoyed our event so much.
We started the evening with a well-known Christmas tale read out by the Head of the Language Center, Dr. Javorek. Then we went straight into the caroling. Accompanied by a small choir consisting of participants and teachers of our courses, everyone sang along eagerly. To make sure no-one would have difficulties following the lyrics, we projected the text onto the wall in best karaoke fashion and handed out little songbooks that the committed singers could take home after the event as well.
After a short break where everyone could enjoy the refreshments at the buffet such as tea, coffee, mulled wine, biscuits and cake, the program continued with a little transverse flute concerto. More Christmas carols to sing along to and an atmospheric conclusion with “Silent Night” rounded off the evening.
International dialogue is of course very important to us as a Language Center. With this celebration, we wanted to encourage German and international students and staff members to exchange experiences and ideas and celebrate Christmas together in a relaxed atmosphere.
While preparing for the event, the participants of our courses were able to practice their English with songs and learn about Christmas traditions in English-speaking countries. Having fun and a relaxed environment make learning so much easier.
It was definitely worth all the work that went into preparing this event. Thank you again to all the hard-working helpers who assisted us in the preparations: the choir singers, the bakers and last but not least all the students who helped at the buffet and who assisted us setting everything up and cleaning out the room afterwards.
We hope you all had as much fun as we did and we have heard from many people who participated that they left the event richer in cultural and language experience. Maybe you, too, have met some new, interesting people.
Happy holidays to you and your loved ones!

Come and join us for our English Christmas Carol Sing-Along at the Language Center of Universität Hamburg!
Singing Christmas carols together for the holidays has a long tradition in the English-speaking world. During Christmas caroling, groups of singers go from door to door and sing familiar Christmas songs to spread Christmas spirit and joy in their neighborhood.
We at the Language Center would like to share this tradition with you this Christmas. On Friday, December 5th, 2014 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, we would like to get together and sing Christmas carols with you.
Our Christmas Carol Sing-Along will take place at Von-Melle-Park 5 in room 79.
We have selected some well-known and some lesser-known Christmas carols and invite you to come along and sing with us. The singers will be supported by a small choir and the song lyrics will be projected onto the wall. This way, everyone can sing along, no matter how well you know the song.
There will also be coffee, tea, mulled wine and biscuits to get you into the culinary Christmas spirit as well.
Admission, food, and drinks are free. Join us for an evening full of magic, Christmas spirit and the fun of singing together.
Have fun and happy holidays!
