Modern Languages
Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages of the Language Center!
The Language Center of Universität Hamburg is a multidisciplinary provider of language, culture and soft skills for studies and work. Our services are aimed at students and staff of Universität Hamburg and are free of charge.
The Language Center now serves about 5,000 students per semester, supervised by our team together with 60-65 teachers. In addition, we offer language classes specifically developed for individual faculties as well as for academic and administrative staff.
Language classes offered by the Department of Modern Languages
Attend interdisciplinary or subject-specific classes in the following languages:
- English
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
- Russian
- Turkish
- Chinese
- Portuguese
The team works together in pragmatic and communicative ways and always acts in a service- and result-oriented manner. This means that we always make sure to integrate the latest teaching methods and focus on the practical application of language in order to make sure that the participants' language learning goals are met.
The Language Center provides a safe space for students to get to know and support each other, exchange ideas, and learn together with mutual respect and curiosity, free from prejudice or judgment.
Our teachers are all doubly qualified, i.e. experienced in both subject matter and language didactics. This is how we guarantee the high quality of our teaching.
Class levels
Our language classes are aimed at advanced speakers and are therefore taught at levels B2 to C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. This does not apply to the staff courses, which are also offered at lower levels.
Further offers
In addition to a well-equipped self-study center where students can improve their language skills with books, learning software, study materials and through individual counseling, the Language Center established a Testing Center in 2016, where internationally recognized language tests and university entrance exams can be taken in addition to our existing placement for language courses and language certificates.
Outside of the course work, the Language Center also works on projects with students to teach culture and language through exciting and helpful supplemental offerings, and offers well-attended events on language and language learning.
