Universities are also targets for hackers. Secure passwords are not enough to prevent cyberattacks. To increase device and data security, Universität Hamburg is introducing multi-factor authentication step-by-step for all University members.
Why does Universität Hamburg need multi-factor authentication?
Several German universities already experienced hacker attacks that resulted in their being offline for weeks. It took just a few hours to prevent students and staff from accessing their emails. In addition to significant data losses, universities also saw themselves facing ransom demands. To reduce the risk of cyberattacks on Universität Hamburg and increase device and data protection, the University is introducing multi-factor authentication for all of its members.
What is multi-factor authentication (or “2FA”)?
Multi-factor authentication, or 2FA for short, is a procedure in which users log into their device using not just their standard password but also identify themselves using a self-chosen “second factor.” This second factor can be, for example, a laptop, mobile phone, or finger print. Users can access their data only after they have confirmed their identity through the second factor. Many people are already familiar with the principle, for example, from online banking.
See the explanatory video for more information about 2FA.
As an employee, what should I do now?
Wait for a letter: The University is introducing 2FA step-by-step over several weeks and months. All staff members will receive a letter from the Regional Computing Center with a code list. This is a personal list with numbers that can be used for the first authentication and that needs to be permanently and securely stored.
After you receive the list, you can register step-by-step for the devices you wish to secure using 2FA. Once you register, 2FA works automatically.
Further steps
Starting on 4 September, the faculties, the University Administration, and the Hamburg Business School will be begin step-by-step with the authentication. See the information from the Regional Computing Center for details.
