How can we decolonize the world? And what does that precisely mean for Africa and Europe? The artist Tsitsi Dangarembga and the political scientist Eva Heidbreder discuss this highly relevant topic at the Museum am Rothenbaum—Kulture und Künste der Welt (MARKK) on 11 December 2023. University president Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren will give the welcoming speech.
The event has been designed to facilitate dialogue that brings together different perspectives and, therefore, invites visitors to take in other points of view. Tsitsi Dangarembga comes from what is now Zimbabwe. She works as an artist, curator, and director, among other things, and was awarded the 2021 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. She is currently an artist in residence at the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS). Once a year, HIAS invites researchers and creative artists from around the world to conduct research in Hamburg for several months. These research stays are financed by Universität Hamburg with funds from the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments.
What role can we as individuals play?
Eva Heidbreder is a professor of political science at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, where she focuses on governance in the European multilevel system, and conducts research at the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg through the Scholar in Residence program. In addition to a global classification, the 2 fellows will also attempt to outline the role of each individual in this issue. In particular, they will also address the role of women in the decolonization process.
The event, which will be held in English, is open to the public and will commence at 6 pm at the MARKK (Rothenbaumchaussee 64), with University President Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren and Anna Hofmann of the Zeit Stiftung Bucerius opening proceedings. The discussion will commence after a short introduction and a reading from Tsitsi Dangarembga’s essay “Black and Female.” There will be a reception in the museum restaurant afterwards. Participation is free of charge, but registration is requested.
