In a post-pandemic, globally volatile world, what is the “new normal” for international research collaboration? This was the opening question for discussion at the Why Research in Internationalization Matters conference on 16 May.
Universität Hamburg and the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) hosted the conference. The topic of the panel discussion at Universität Hamburg was resilience in a complex world order. The prominent panelists included Prof. Maria Leptin, president of the European Research Council; Prf. Angela Ittel, president of the Technische Universität Braunschweig; and Prof. Hauke Heekeren, president of Universität Hamburg.
The conference took place within the scope of the Hamburg Forum for Global Science and Policy and focused on current challenges in international research. In a post-pandemic, globally volatile world, what is the “new normal” for international research collaboration? The key question, which focused on the connections between internationalization, research, and resilience, was why research is important in internationalization. It was designed to inspire discourse among researchers, research managers, and university leadership on this important but often neglected topic.
