Whether a tutor, an employee in the administration, or a student research assistant—Universität Hamburg offers a lot of possibilities for gaining professional experience alongside your studies. Students support work processes in all areas and get a glimpse behind the scenes. Three of them take a look at their own experiences below.
- Name: Alina Burmester
- Faculty: Humanities
- Welcome to Universität Hamburg: student employee in the doctoral studies office
The work in the doctoral studies office is never boring. Generally, I provide administrative support to doctoral researchers throughout their doctoral research. That means that my duties range from filing, inventory, and handling mail to answering queries. So it’s very varied. What I especially like is having responsibility, that I get to know much of the University, and that the job is compatible with my studies. The office is directly next to my faculty and I can adapt my working hours to my courses.
I have also learned through this job how the University is operated and managed—you forget quickly how much happens in the background and what makes studying at a university possible in the first place. My goal is to also work at a university later.
- Name: Robert Kurwahl
- Faculty: Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences
- Welcome to Universität Hamburg: student employee at the Center for Free Electron Laser Science (CFEL)
In my work as a student employee, I have the chance to actively take part in research projects. Right now I am working with a program on data evaluation written by a former postdoc. I evaluate the data myself, but I am also further developing the program to add new functions. What I enjoy most: Thinking about how I can use the available data to solve a specific problem and then, using program code, how to put my solutions into practice. It’s interesting that programming has become an everyday task in physics. Furthermore, thanks to my participation in the weekly meetings of the research group, I have learned how important teamwork in science is.
At the beginning of studies I already wanted to do a doctorate in physics. My work as a student employee has only strengthened my resolve and I can well imagine working longer-term as a scientist at the university.
- Name: Svea Felicitas Mumme
- Faculty: Humanities
- Welcome to Universität Hamburg: academic tutor in the tutorial program at the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL)
The core of the HUL tutorial program is an open qualifications program for student tutors. It also has a jobs platform for student jobs and it organizes advising and support offers for tutors and teachers. So my responsibilities are very diverse. I write a newsletter, am responsible for communication with course members, issue certificates, and oversee our OpenOlate courses. Good cooperation with my supervisor is the best part for me. She encourages and pushes me and she helps me face new challenges. Now I even lead workshops in which I teach future tutors motivational theories or how to use PowerPoint.
And I really appreciate the compatibility of work and study. Not only can I work from home; I can also pretty much set my own working hours. Thanks to my insights into the processes at th University, I have generally learned about the structures here and new scientific areas. I can easily imagine working at the university after I get my degree and doing a doctorate.
