Funding study abroad

Funding will be granted to students who have completed at least one year of domestic study. Exception: funding for complete degree programs within the EU. Funding is usually provided for one year at a university abroad. For exceptions and regulations, please consult the Internet (BAföG).

Funding to study abroad is comprised of financial support for domestic study as well as an additional subsidy to study in a foreign country (outside of the EU) and a travel allowance (50 % subsidy, 50% interest-free loan). Tuition fees of up to €4,600 per year will be covered in full.

Applications must be submitted to the responsible BAföG office at least six months prior to the planned period of study abroad.

• Gerda Henkel Stiftung (foundation), Düsseldorf
  This foundation provides travel and equipment subsidies for doctoral or research projects in history, archaeology, art history, and the history of law.
• Goethe Institut, Munich
  Foreign Language Assistant Program at Goethe institutes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Ukraine for students and graduates of Slavic studies, German studies, German as a foreign language, history, political science, and related fields. Provides a monthly stipend and travel subsidies.
• Pädagogischer Austauschdienst COMENIUS (educational exchange program) Provides students in teacher training programs in all disciplines with opportunities to improve their foreign language skills and gain teaching experience at schools throughout Europe. Maintenance and travel subsidies.
  
  • Foreign language assistent program
  • Information on Pädagogischer Austauschdienst for students in Hamburg, Forein language assistants (FSAs) are primarily employed at secondary schools as teaching assistants for German as a foreign language. Teaching duties generally comprise 12 hours per week. The program especially targets students in teacher training for English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese. Students from other departments and prospective teachers with other subject combinations are also welcome to apply. The requirements for France and China were amended to include students from all disciplines. Monthly subsidy to cover living expenses.
• Robert Bosch Stiftung (foundation)
  Promotes German language and culture and provides teaching opportunities at schools in Central Europe, South-Eastern Europe, CIS, and China. The program is aimed at students and graduates of all subjects as well as students in teacher training with the subjects German, political science, and history. 
• Stiftung Bildung und Wissenschaft (foundation)
  Deutsches Stiftungszentrum, Essen: Doctoral grants in the fields of modern German literatur and contemporary history.
• Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation)
  The program Wissenschafts- und Auslandsjournalismus (academic teaching, research, and international journalism) welcomes graduates from all disciplines who are pursuing careers in international or science journalism. Funding for internships, traineeships, and degree programs at German and international journalism schools.
• Studienstiftung der Süddeutschen Zeitung (academic foundation), Munich
  Scholarships for journalism students who want to build upon knowledge in their field in Germany and abroad.
• Die ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, Hamburg
  The Bucerius doctoral scholarship program supports research on the history of relations between Germany and Central and Eastern Europe and doctoral dissertations on the history of Central and Eastern Europe.

• Evonik Foundation, Düsseldorf
  Scholarships and grants for students, including doctoral students, in the field of chemistry.
• Kurt Hansen Scholarships, Bayer Science Education Foundation, Bayer AG, Leverkusen
  Teacher training students in biology and chemistry can apply for internships, study projects, summer courses, and supplemental courses of study.
• Otto Bayer Scholarships, Bayer Science  Education Foundation, Bayer AG, Leverkusen
  Scholarships are granted to students and young professionals (up to 2 years after graduation) in the fields of biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and computational life sciences to who wish to study or conduct a research project abroad. Scholarships support research projects and internships. Semesters abroad can only be supported if a research project is simultaneously conducted.
• Carl Duisberg Scholarships, Bayer Science Education Foundation, Bayer AG, Leverkusen
  Scholarships are granted to students and young professionals (up to 2 years after graduation) in the fields of human and veterinary medicine, medical science, medical engineering, public health, and health economics to realize a research project or internship. In addition, students in the field of human medicine can receive financial support for a third of the clinical internship year abroad or for research projects connected to doctoral programs. Semesters abroad can only be supported if a research project is simultaneously conducted.
• Jeff Schell Scholarships, Bayer AG, Leverkusen
  Scholarships are granted to students and young professionals (up to 2 years after graduation) in the fields of agricultural sciences, digital farming, agronomy, crop sciences, green biotechnology, environmental sciences, and sustainability to study or conduct a research project abroad. Scholarships support research projects and internships. Semesters abroad can only be supported if a research project is simultaneously conducted.
• Chemical Industry Fund, Frankfurt
  Funding for doctoral students in chemistry who want to study abroad.
• Biomedical Sciences Exchange Program Inc. (BMEP)
  For biomedical students (medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, health sciences, etc.) Applicants must be working on Diplom or doctoral theses, and plan to continue their research in the USA, Canada, the Baltic region, and South China, or to conduct further research in their field.
• Flora Immerschitt-Stiftung (foundation), Essen
  Part of the German Stifterverband: Promoting Science and Education. Provides travel subsidies for junior researchers in medicine and the biosciences who want to attend international conferences.
• German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), Osnabrück
  Doctoral scholarships for junior researchers from all disciplines aiming to complete advanced research projects with a focus on environmental protection.

• Stiftung Geld und Währung (money and currency foundation) Deutsches Stiftungszentrum (German Foundation Centre), Essen
  For doctoral students in economics or law working on money and currency.

• Haniel-Stipendienprogramm, German National Academic Foundation, Bonn
  Scholarships for advanced studies in economics including an internship abroad.

• Robert Bosch Stiftung (foundation), Stuttgart
  Lecturership program at universities in Eastern Europe and China for graduates in the humanities, social sciences, law, and economics.

• Bucerius Law Programme, German National Academic Foundation, Bonn. Funding for research and study in law abroad. Applicants must provide proof that they have successfully passed the first Staatsexamen (state examination) before taking up a scholarship. LLM and master's degree students may only apply for funding if their project includes a research component.

• “Chinese Law Taught in English“ (CLTE, one-semster program), China-EU School of Law (CESL) at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), Bejing, China. Funding and organization of semester in China for law students.

• Chinesisch-Deutsches Institut für Rechtswissenschaft (PDF, in German only) at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). Funding for students of political science and law who want to spend a semester abroad.

• Rotary Foundation
  The Rotary Foundation offers short- and long-term scholarships and grants to university graduates with at least 3 years of job experience for master’s studies or a 3-month certificate program in the field of peace and conflict resolution / prevention at one of the Rotary Peace Centres at 6 Rotary partner universities.

China Scholarship Program, Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation), Bonn. Offers scholarships to students from all disciplines (exception: students majoring in Sinology); two semesters of study in China plus subsequent internship in a German-Chinese corporation. Knowledge of Chinese desirable but not required.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Liaison Office, Bonn. The JSPS Fellowship Program offers grants to doctoral students aiming to conduct research in Japan.

Canon Foundation in Europe, The Netherlands. Fellowships for research projects in Japan.  Applicants must have completed studies.

EU Japan Centre, Brussels Scholarships and grants for internships in Japan for students of the natural sciences and engineering.

  Scholarships for program-related internships in France Applications should be submitted to the responsible department at the home university.
• Scholarships for intensive language courses in France The language course must be completed immediately prior to your stay and offered by a school recognized by the DFJW.
• The Eiffel program, Paris
  The Eiffel scholarship program of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides funding for periods of study in France. Targets students of business administration, law, political science, and engineering.

Austria

• Austrian Database for Scholarships and Research Grants Scholarships and grants to study or conduct research in Austria.

Sweden

• Swedish Institute Scholarships and research grants for periods of study or research in Sweden.

Eastern and Southern Europe, Russia

• Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) Metropolen in Osteuropa Program (Eastern European cities program) Funding to study or do research, internships, or language courses in an Eastern or Central European country. Targets students from all disciplines. Eastern European language skills desirable but not required.
• Haniel Stiftung, Duisburg Scholarships and grants to study, do internships, or take preparatory language courses as part of an academic program or complete an additional internship in Central or Eastern Europe (including Russia). Targets students majoring or graduates with degrees in business-related subject areas (bachelor's students must have completed at least three semesters).

• GFPS e.V., Berlin
  Association which promotes student exchange in Central and Eastern Europe. GFPS offers scholarships and grants to students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines who want to study in Poland or the Czech Republic.
• Goethe Institut, Munich  Language assistant program at the Goethe Institutes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, or the Ukraine for students and graduates in the fields of Slavic studies, German studies, German as a foreign language, history, political science, and related subjects. Monthly salary and travel expense reimbursement.
• Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stuttgart
  Lecturers' program at universities in Eastern Europe and China for graduates in the humanities, social sciences, law, and engineering.

• Fulbright Commission One-year scholarships and grants for German students and graduates who want to study at an American university. Travel grants for students who want to study in the USA through a German-American university exchange program.

• Federation of German-American Clubs
  Scholarships for a one year of study (all subjects with the exception of medicine and law) at a partner university of the Federation.
• ERP grant program, Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation), Bonn. Advanced studies at a university in the USA, including an internship in the public sector. Targets prospective lawyers, economists, business people, or social scientists who want to work in the public sector (in the broadest sense) and have already been active in social or political contexts. (Funding to conduct research, pursue an LLM, a master's, or an MBA; partial PhD funding).
• McCloy Academic Scholarship Program, Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation), Bonn. Two-year graduate program in the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University conferring a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Targets young lawyers, economists, or business people, and social scientists (exceptions may be possible if academic aim can be realized at the Kennedy School).
• Walter-Oppenhoff-Stiftung, Stifterverband: Promoting Science and Education, Essen. Further qualifications for lawyers, primarily at institutions in the United States.

Government of Canada
Scholarships and grants to study or pursue research in Canada.

• Ranke-Heinemann Studienstiftung, Essen  Scholarships and grants to study in Australia or New Zealand. Support for undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, language grants are offered to students who want to complete a language program.

• IEC Online-International Education Centre, Berlin  Scholarships and grants for selected programs at partner universities of the IEC in Australia and New Zealand.
• GOstralia, Stuttgart. Scholarships for selected programs at partner universities in Australia.
•  Australia Awards program run by the Australian government.
• DeAN e.V., Friedrichsdorf. Travel grants for students who have been admitted to study or conduct research at Australian universities or institutions.

• Israel Diplomatic Network, Berlin. Scholarships and grants from the Israeli government to study at universities in Israel, including summer school programs and summer language courses. Gives preference to students pursuing research on the history of the Jewish people, the State of Israel, Judaism, international relations / political science, or Hebrew literature and language.
