Interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation characterize research at the University of Hamburg. Our projects are important, focusing on urgent problems facing society and major issues in science and scholarship.
This has led to great success in the most various funding programs. For example, our researchers regularly receive major grants through the German Research Foundation’s funding lines and through the European Research Council (ERC).

To support doctoral researchers early in their career, the University of Hamburg takes part in 2 international Max Planck research institutions and a Leibniz graduate school. The University, in cooperation with DESY, also facilitates top interdisciplinary training for 250 doctoral candidates through the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School.

These special funding institutions for basic research in the humanities and social sciences are initiated by German institutes of advanced study. Six long-term projects are currently being funded at the University of Hamburg. They focus on different cultures and their transmission.
