Semester public transport pass
Students enrolled at Universität Hamburg will receive a semester public transport pass from the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV) upon paying their semester contribution. In Summer Semester 2024, the semester public transport pass will be converted to a digital ticket as part of the conversion to a discount Deutschland-Ticket.
Get your ticket →
Before downloading the ticket, read the data protection information pursuant to Art. 13 GDPR for the Deutschlandsemesterticket .
How do I get the ticket?
You get the ticket by downloading it from the ticket portal following these instructions. Instead of the QR code mentioned in the instructions, you can also use the link at the top of this page.
If you have problems with the download, contact the HVV: SBHH.Kundensupport"AT"deutschebahn.com or +49 40 3918-3900
What changes will that mean for me?
- You will no longer receive semester documents per post. Your proof of enrollment will still be available to you, however, in STiNE. Once this becomes available, you have successfully reenrolled.
- Your student ID will be provided digitally. You can find the ID to download on your STiNE account. It will be part of your online proof of enrollment (below right in the document). Like the enrollment certificate, the ID can be printed and is valid in printed form, as well.
- The semester public transport will soon cost less. The share of the semester contribution for the semester public transport pass for Summer Semester 2024 will be €176.40, reducing the overall semester contribution to €332.
- The semester public transport pass is valid for public transportation and regional travel throughout Germany starting on 1 April 2024. Starting from Summer Semester 2024, the semester public transport pass is a fully valid Deutschland-Ticket. For information about the validity of the Deutschland-Ticket, see https://www.hvv-deutschlandticket.de/en/faq/
When I log in to the portal, I receive the message that I do not have authorization
If you receive a message that you do not have authorization to download the ticket, there can be several reasons for that:
- You have not yet paid the full semester contríbution or your payment could not be assigned to you. If you have not paid yet, please do so. Please check the sample payment slip in your STiNE account and your transfer details to check whether you have transferred the correct amount and, if necessary, transfer any remaining amounts. Please also check whether you entered your student ID correctly when making the transfer - if this is not the case, the payment cannot be assigned to you. In this case please contact us. If you transferred recently, please be patient - it usually takes 2-3 working days for the payment to be assigned to your account.
- There is a problem with your health insurance. This may be the case especially if you are enrolling for the first time, as your health insurance company must report your insurance status to Universität Hamburg for you to be finally enrolled. If you think this may be the case, contact us! We will advise you further.
- There is a technical problem. If you think that this could be the reason, contact the HVV: SBHH.kundensupport@deutschebahn.com(SBHH.Kundensupport"AT"deutschebahn.com) or +49 40 3918-3900.
I am enrolling as a first year student. What do I have to do?
If you enroll as a first-year student, you can get a preliminary ticket that is valid until 30 April or 31 October. If the portal offers you a ticket that is valid for the entire semester, select this ticket. If you are offered the preliminary ticket only, select that ticket. In this case, please pay the semester contribution. If you have already paid, please check whether your health insurance company has reported your insurance status to Universität Hamburg. Once the contribution has been paid and your status has been reported, you can download the ticket that is valid for the entire semester from the portal. Don't forget to do this as the preliminary ticket will expire after a month!
I do not have a mobile device and cannot use a digital ticket.
Students without a smartphone now have the opportunity to apply for an alternative via the Studierendenwerk Hamburg in order to be able to use their digital semester ticket. The cost of this is €15 per semester, but you can have this reimbursed by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg after payment.
You can find all further information and the application form here: https://www.stwhh.de/studienfinanzierung/semesterticketerstattung

Exemption from the semester public transport pass
From Winter Semester 2024/25, you can apply to be exempted from the semester public transport pass. Find detailed information on what are sufficient grounds for applying and the required proof on our exemption webpage. If you are exempted before paying the semester contribution, the ticket fee will be deducted from your contribution to reduce the amount payable. If you are exempted after having paid the contribution, we will reimburse the ticket fee. Please submit your exemption request BEFORE you pay the entire semester contribution total, as reimbursement may take some time.
Reimbursement through the hardship fund
If you have no use for the semester public transport pass, e.g., because you live close to the University or will be spending a semester abroad, you can apply to be reimbursed for the transport pass.
Your application for a semester public transport pass reimbursement will be processed by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg. Detailed information on the conditions and deadlines as well as the digital application form for reimbursement can be found on the website of the Studierendenwerk Hamburg (see "semester ticket reimbursement").
Reimbursement upon withdrawal from the University
If you are no longer enrolled at Universität Hamburg, you may apply for a semester public transport pass reimbursement with the S-Bahn Hamburg Transport Association (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund, HVV). Please contact S-Bahn Hamburg regarding your refund request: SBHH.Kundensupport@deutschebahn.com or by phone 040 3918 3900.
NOTE: You will not be reimbursed from the date of your withdrawal but from the date of making contact with the HVV about reimbursement.
Reimbursement for semester public transport pass contribution
If you just enrolled at Universität Hamburg and receive your semester public transport pass after the official start of the lecture period, you may be eligible to be reimbursed for transportation costs arising in the period up until your semester public transport pass arrives. For reimbursement, you need certification issued by Universität Hamburg stating that the University is responsible for the fact that you received the ticket late. This can be obtained from the student affairs team.
Note: Doctoral students enrolling during the semester cannot be reimbursed.
Temporary tickets issued before the semester officiall starts, i.e., either 1 October or 1 April, do not qualify for reimbursement.
IMPORTANT: the Service Center staff accepts only personalized weekly or monthly tickets with a passport photo! Single tickets will not be reimbursed.
Remember to bring a passport photo. As soon as you have received your provisional semester public transport pass, you can apply for reimbursement. To apply for reimbursement, visit the S-Bahn / Deutsche Bahn Service Center and submit your personalized weekly or monthly ticket together with your provisional semester transport pass.
