University Council of Universität Hamburg

Universität Hamburg's University Council has nine honorary members, four appointed by the Academic Senate and four by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. These eight members elect a ninth member as well as a chairperson and deputy chair from among the non-University members.

The Council is largely responsible for the strategic control of the University. In addition to electing the University President and Kanzler , the University Council authorizes business plans and accepts the Executive University Board's annual reports.

On 19 June 2020, the members of the University Council elected Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Petra Wend CBE PhD FRSA FRSE as chair.

 On 25 September 2020, the members of the University Council elected Assistant Professor Dr. Jörn Pütz as its ninth member.

The University Council regularly updates University members on all topics and results of its meetings.

  • Deputy chair: Prof. Dr. Olaf Köller, professor of empirical education research, managing director of research at the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN)
  • Prof. Dr. Alexander Bassen, professor of business administration, with a focus on capital markets and business management Prof. Dr. Bassen is the head of the Center for a Sustainable University (KNU). Memberships include the Council for Sustainable Development (RNE).
  • Prof. Dr. Vincent Heuveline, professor of scientific computing at Heidelberg University, Chief Information Officer (CIO), head of the university computing center, head of the Data Mining and Uncertainty Quantification research group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS)

  • Assistant Prof. Dr. Joern Pütz, Maître de conférences of molecular biology and biochemistry at the University of Strasbourg / CNRS, France. Dr. Pütz is the vice president for Franco-German relations. He is a member of the university council of the Franco-German University (DFH-UFA).
